Your hāngī/umu earth oven food of Polynesia includes pork, chicken, taro, island style potato salad, and much more. The hangi/umu is cooked in an earth-oven, a hole 1-2m into the ground, the baskets of kai (food) are placed on hot stones at the bottom of a hāngī pit. The kai is then covered to trap the heat, the steam and heat from heated hāngī stones infuses the kai with delicious earthy flavours while it cooks for 3-4 hours. Stop At: Mount Ngongotaha Scenic Reserve, Western Heights, Rotorua 3015, New Zealand

Head to the summit of Mount Ngongotaha on this 1.15 to 1.5 hour guided 4WD buggy adventure, travelling over 100 year old forestry trails. Lush native bush showcases the famous Silver Ferns and a variety of native birds and animals. The highlight of your ride is reaching the highest lookout which captures the most spectacular, breathtaking views overlooking Lake Rotorua and beyond.

Stop At: Mitai Maori Village, 196 Fairy Springs Road, Rotorua New Zealand

Your journey continues onto a traditional Maori Village which provides an authentic introduction to Maori stories of the past. View the sacred freshwater spring “Fairy Spring” and glowworms in their natural habitat, witness the warriors in traditional dress paddling an ancient warrior canoe in a natural bush setting. Enjoy a traditional earth cooked Hangi feast served from a buffet – have the opportunity to view the succulent Hangi as it’s been uplifted from the earth oven into the ground. The Maori Village experience takes approximately 3 hours.
