Itinerary

Stop At: Trg Franje Tuđmana, 21000, Split, Croatia
We will meet at bus station on the Trg (Square) Franje Tuđmana where you will be introduced with details of the Communist tour of Split. Also, here you will be introduced with major happenings during World War II in Split and Yugoslavia in general which lead to the birth of the new communist state. You will be shown some pictures of damage made in Split during the War.

Stop At: Poljud Stadium, Mediteranskih Igara 2, Split 21000 Croatia
Short panoramic stop will be done to see and hear about the most beatiful stadium built during communist period in Yugoslavia which was also very known outside of the country. One of the symbols of Split, Poljud Stadium was built to host the biggest sport happening in Yugoslavia until then, Mediterranean Games. Poljud Stadium was one of the top exhibits of Yugoslavia architecture exhibition held in MoMA in New York which explains a lot of its importance.
On the same location attention will be given to the widest existing building in Split named “China Wall” which is also product of Yugoslavian socialist architecture.

While you are walking around the “first shopping mall” in Yugoslavia you will be able to see and hear what was the “modern” idea of shopping in that communist state. You will find out about its short popularity and its decay during the years. Also, here you will be introduced with Yugoslavia consumer life, which has always been between “open west” and “closed east” and has its own story in which people often had to be creative for supplying themselves with different types of goods.

Split 3 is a modern communist Yugoslavia neighborhood which was purposely built to provide quaility “living, working and resting” place for its habitants, It was unique high quaility project during communist era in Yugoslavia which became known in world terms as an example of excellent planned modern neigborhoods. While we are walking around and checking different architecture styles of local architects which gave signature on each building of this project like building called “Cruiser”, you will find out about housing policy, educational system, health system, economy, social life and politics with emphasis on dictatorship of Yugoslav communist leader Tito, mostly through the examples of Split area.
Split 3 project was also one of the top exibits on exibition of Yugoslavia architecture in Museum of Moden Art in New York where it was recognised as one of the high important residental projects of Yugoslavia in general.

Stop At: Hotel Zagreb, Split, Put Duilova 23, 21000, Split, Croatia
Military resort Hotel Zagreb is great example of communist Yugoslavia way of thinking, that vacation has to be provided and possible for everyone. Even in such objects, for “everyone”, there were luxurious parts like panoramic elevators which lead directly to the beach. Decay of hotel buildings in modern times symbolize decadence of socialist ideas, such as “tourism for everyone”.

Was it “Yugoslavian economic miracle” really a miracle or just a story for domestic and foreign public? You will find out while you are having a look on industrial part of Split.

Stop At: Split Predgrađe, 21000, Split, Croatia
On the final stop, Kopilica railway station, you will be able to hear some of the reasons why Yugoslavia didn`t manage to survive and why the end of it in the 1990`s was pretty violent and finished with bloody war. While you are listening the story you will be looking at armored train exposed on the railway. Armored train is symbolizing beggining of bloody end of Yugoslavia which had great consequences and which changed the relations between nations and religions in southeast Europe once again.
